What to expect from experiencing Person centred counselling

The 1st meeting

If you are unsure about what to expect from having counselling, In the first meeting you can have the opportunity of discussing why you want counselling, experience my style, how many sessions you may require and any other questions or concerns you may have. I will then be able to explain to you what the process of counselling is about, the BACP guidelines I have to follow, discuss the fee and the contract. In the first meeting it can help you decide whether you want to go ahead and follow through the process of having further counselling.

The process
Counselling can take as long or as short as your process dictates. It is lead by you and my job is to respond, offer insights and the 6 conditions of worth (see link to Carl Rogers). By me facilitating in your process, it will help with the therapeutic change that will be taking place with your process. Within the counselling sessions an organic review of your process will be taking form. This will be helping you decide how many more sessions you may need. Counselling children

When I work with children the first meeting will be with the main carer and the child where we will discuss the process above in a way that the child as well as the adult will understand. There will be creative materials available for the child to express themselves  through play as well as speech. The sort of creative materials I have available and have had experience of  working with are: Play dough, dolls house, miniatures, finger puppets, a selection of paints, glitter paper, dolls and story telling. It will ultimately be up to the child whether (after the first meeting) they want to proceed with the counselling.

I have my own private practice where I can see children and adults for counselling at my home in Todmorden on Tuesday's, Wednesday's, Thursday afternoon and the occasional Saturday.
